I am looking for this protocol for vets
I am looking for someone in the San Antonio, TX area that works with training Basenji’s. I have a new puppy and this is the first time we have had this breed of dog. I want to make sure we are understanding her way of communication and don’t make any mistakes. She is a sweet puppy!
The Gonto Fanconi Protocol for veterinarians can be found at:
Click to access fanconiprotocol2003.pdf
Note: there is an updated Gonto Fanconi Protocol (introduced June, 2015), and it is up on our web site under Select Category/Fanconi in the pulldown box on the upper right of every page.
My name is Laura Sacks, I have an Australian Terrier that the vet suspects has Fanconi Syndrome? I need to get any info that I can to save my Bruiser’s life. Please any assistance you can offer is appreciated. I am in VA.
There are several good articles on Fanconi on our Basenji Companions’ web site – see guide box on upper right.
The first step is to see if your dog has a normal blood glucose and is possibly spilling glucose in the urine. Next, find a vet who will do a venous blood gas – usually larger veterinary centers which do a lot of surgery. Check the HCO3 reading on the blood gas. It should be about 19-23. If less, there is a very strong suspicion of Fanconi. Take a copy of the Fanconi Protocol (on our web site) to your vet and follow. If Fanconi is confirmed, check back at Fanconidogsfirstname.lastname@example.org to be included on the Fanconidogs’ support group.
Best of luck! Betsy Polglase

Thanks so much for the info. I will take it to my vet. We are still trying to figure out what is wrong with him. Thanks again for your help.

I tried to join Fanconidogsfirstname.lastname@example.org but received no answer! I am now trying to join your other group basenjicompanions.org As I said in the my past email, on July 1st I adopted my wonderful & handsome Basenji, Garnett is a Fanconi dog. I am looking for anyone who has a Fanconi dog in Manhattan,NY.
I live on the upper eastside and would love to meet another pet owner who has a positive dog. I also need a good recommendation for a dog walker.
I feel all alone with this challenge and could use any support out there.
We are available on Facebook, on yahoogroups, and you should have encountered a PDF download to get our membership form.
Janet, I’m so sorry that your request to join Fanconidogs@Yahoogroups.com oup did not reach me. Please contact me directly at As you are an owner/caretaker of a Fanconi dog, you are certainly eligible to join, and I”ll make sure you get an invitation to join. I’m sure you will find the group knowledgeable, helpful and kind. We have had over 300 Fanconi dogs and their owners on the list in the 17 years that we have been in existence.
The Fanconidogs support group is a separate group from Basenji Companions, athough I founded them both.
As someone mentioned, if you want to join Basenji Companions, go to the “join” page on our web site, download the .pdf membership form and send it in. We also have a free Facebook page with nearly 2,000 members from all over the world.
Hope to see you on both soon. Betsy Polglase
Our B’s DNA results have just come back as Affected Fanconi Syndrome.
I have sent an email to email@example.com to join. I am already a member on Basenji Companions Facebook page.
Hello, I have a 6 yr old Jack Russel that was diagnosed with Fanconi. Can I join this group. I’m looking for suitable Pet vitamins other than the Pet Tabs mentioned in the Gonto protocol.
If you click on ‘membership information’ in the main menu, you can download our membership form which will give you access to our member listserv and the accumulated advice of some of our most knowledgeable folks. We do have a Facebook group, but if you ask a question like this on there you are likely to get all kinds of advice from people who are not officially members of the organization, and may not have the experience or knowledge you’re looking for.
