Basenji Companions: the Club Devoted to Pet Basenjis

Poem and picture by Sherri Crispin

Like any basenji, I love to roam
But more than any outside place
I love my home.

It's my castle, and I have such fun
Moving from room to room,
Following the warm sun.

In the morning, I love to lay
On the bedroom floor, all stretched out,
Belly freckles soaking up the rays.

In the afternoon, it's the top
Of the stairs, where the light comes in all sparkly
That's where I like to stop.

Then at night, I freeze
Here in San Diego it must get down
to at least 65 degrees!

So I cuddle up on the couch
I don't like sharing, but if you are nice
And warm, I won't be a grouch.

But my most favorite place is the Persian rug,
It's a little bit prickly and not all that comfy,
But mom says I look cute as a bug!

Basenji stories have a familiar ring. Whether it be curiosity, perseverance, or mischief, some inner urge drives the Basenji to discover what the world is about. Read some other stories about Basenjis in this section. The Tale of the Basenji's Tail was written by member Rachael Whitney. Or read about Ann Roche's observations of Basenjis while living in Zaire from 1979 to 1983. Sally Wallis shares her experiences and tips when traveling with Basenjis. Or check out cartoons by Shirley Jones or our member's haiku based on the traits of Basenjis.
